Fortunately, however, the people who study cultural evolution already have thought about the question of what sort of cognitive capabilities are needed for the evolution of a human cumulative culture, and they have more than mere verbal arguments to support their conclusions. Despite their slightly different emphasis, some of the models contemplated in that literature seem directly relevant to this discussion. The proponents of these models, too, are worried about loss, corruption, and bad behavior. They, too, appear to have concluded that culling of some kind is indispensably necessary. Nobody but Daniel Dennett is explicitly talking, yet, about “domestication” as a possible solution, but if you look at the models without preconceptions, some of them do seem to be moving in that direction.
